Administration Files of Strathcona School District No. 216

Series reflects administrative activities of Strathcona School District No. 216. Although chiefly financial and staffing issues, opening of new schools, amalgamation with Edmonton School District No. 7, Inspector's Reports, correspondence with University of Alberta, Association of School Trustees of Alberta and Department of Education is also included. Of note is a letter from Lieutenant Governor Bulyea regarding the opening of Strathcona Collegiate Institute. Compiled by the Secretary-Treasurer, files are arranged chronologically. Correspondence of a related subject often glued together. The top document reflects the chronological date within the file but often much earlier documents are attached.

Item consists of Heating and Ventilating Specs for two schools not yet built. One school would be located on Block 7, 8 (HBR), which was bordered by 107 and 108 Streets, the Legislature and Jasper Avenue. The second would be located on one of the Hudsons Bay Additions.

Item consists of two copies of a souvenir program. It includes a history of Edmonton Public Schools and photographs of school board officials and schools. Information about cadets and physical education also included. In addition, the description of building specifications for the Edmonton School and Oliver School are mentioned.

School Management, Health and Discipline Committee Minutes

Series consists of minutes from a committee made up of Trustees, School Board Officials and representatives. Throughout its history, the committee was called The Management Committee; The Management and Health Committee; The Management, Health and Discipline Committee; and The Management and Discipline Committee. The committee addressed staff appointments, dismissals and salaries; new courses and programs; new schools; student discipline; student health issues; and the organization of programs such as Kindergarten.

Item consists of specs for the building, heating and ventilation of H. A. Gray School signed by contractors Doyle, Thomas and Christensen Ltd and by Kelly and Kokott Co. Correspondence about construction problems and costs is included. Reference is made to King Edward and McDougall Schools under construction at the same time.

Garneau Temporary School Construction

Item consists of correspondence and accounts pertaining to the construction of the Garneau Temporary School. Most of the correspondence is between the construction firm of O.J. Edinger and the School Board Building Commissioner.

Temporary Schools Construction

Item consists of letters of tender for the building of temporary schools in Allendale, Highlands, Elm Park, Norwood Extension, and Vermillion Avenue. Correspondence with the successful contractors and balance sheets are included.

Item includes letters of tender for construction of a temporary frame school in Elm Park, a list of hardware used, correspondence from the Building Commissioner at Edmonton Public Schools to the contractor and sub-contractors, and a balance sheet.

Schools, Sites and Statistics

This item is a file of notes compiled by Herbert Story during his position as Building Commissioner 1916-1936, with some additions made by an unknown author after Mr. Story’s tenure. Detailed, organized notes were made regarding school buildings constructed between 1904-1931, site plans, playgrounds, school furnishings, air quality in schools, washroom facilities, sports grounds, and formulas to make stone preservative, linseed oil soap, Sanispray, disinfectant, hectograph mass, ink, and blackboard dressing.

Item is a pamphlet distributed at the official opening of the Edmonton Technical School. Line drawing of the Technical School is featured on front. The history "Ten Years of Technical Education in Edmonton" is printed on verso.

Building and Grounds Committee Minutes

Series contains the minutes of the Building and Grounds Committee, made up of Edmonton Public Schools trustees. In 1935 the committee became the Property Committee. The committee addressed the care and expansion of buildings and grounds and issues affecting custodial and trades staff. It received monthly accounts from the Building Commissioner, information from the Engineer and Superintendent, and concerns from other parties.

Item consists of an invitation to the Formal Opening of the New Calder School and the programme for the event. The invitation includes a description of the school.

Cromdale School Construction

Item consists of the general contract, plumbing, heating and ventilation tenders for the construction of Cromdale School. Correspondence from construction firms and copies of correspondence from the Building Commissioner are included.

6/9-A Ledgers

Item consists of two ledgers, one labeled “Completed” which covers 1936-1959, the other labeled “Current” which covers 1946-1960. Both are divided into school sites. The ledgers record expenditures for buildings and additions and break down the data by type of work. The names of contractors are included.

Property Committee Minutes

Series consists of the minutes from the Property Committee, which was made up of Edmonton Public Schools Trustees with School Board officials and representatives present. The committee was concerned with Edmonton Public Schools sites and addressed issues around utilities, supplies, maintenance, caretaking staff, the use of schools by outside groups, and the renovating and selling of sites.

Item is a student exercise book used as a Utilities Record Book at Victoria School. It records utilities readings, including the amount of coal received and used. All entries are hand-written.

Item consists of a memo to Principals from the Superintendent of Schools about the official opening of Glenora Elementary School and a programme of the opening. A description of the school is included.

Series pertains to the construction, modifications and maintenance of EPSB schools and buildings. Included are construction schedules, tender specifications, architectural and engineering correspondence, blueprints, plans, school inspection reports, and caretaking appointments and resignations. The series is a complete record of the building programs carried out by EPSB on a school by school basis during the period 1942-1972.

Informal Committee Minutes

Item is the minutes of the Informal Committee, made up of Edmonton Public School Trustees and School Board Officials. The Superintendent of Schools attended most Informal Committee meetings. A variety of issues about school sites, employment and student concerns were discussed, some reflecting wartime circumstances.
