Administration Files : Religious Instruction

Item pertains to religious instruction in schools and, specifically, Bible readings. The file includes the document Bible Readings in Edmonton Public Schools, Revised Copy. It also includes the Report of Committee Appointed to Select a List of Bible Readings. Item also contains inquiries from other school boards, parent concerns and evaluations by teachers. Included are letters from the Religious Tract Society and a copy of a report on the learning of the Ten Commandments in state schools in the British Empire.

The Five Year Program : A Guide for Parents

Item is a booklet for parents whose children are rapid learners and therefore eligible for the five year program. The five year program allowed children to complete the six years of elementary school in five years. The booklet describes the program, the type of children who would be eligible, and the role of parents.

Series contains documents pertaining to the administrative activities of Edmonton Public Schools departments, schools, Trustees, and committees. Series contains inactive files that were closed in June 1971 and sent to the vault for storage. Files are arranged numerically by the original file number assigned by creator.

Memorandum of Transmittal

Series consists of documents from the Superintendent of Schools for the Edmonton Public School Board Trustees. The memoranda provided information about schools, students, staff, buildings, departments, curriculum changes, grievances, press releases and meetings. Appendices are included, but not all are on file.

Grade One Science Process Test

Item is a test examining the degree to which the objectives for the program Science : A Process Approach, Level A were being met. The resulting data was to be used for possible program revision. Included in this item are the test manual, a list of slide numbers and their correlating test questions, and three plastic sheets of slides. The original box and slide carousel, 84.47.6-10 are missing.

Item is the term examination report for Bennett School. It lists the students, their ages, the grades they achieved in various subjects, and the teachers' recommendations. The name of the teacher for each grade is also included.

School Supplies

Item originated in Bennett School and consists of a general list of supplies to be handed out, a tally of supplies given to individual pupils in Grades II, III and IV in September 1915, and the names of the students who received primers in January 1915.

Item is an illustrated copy of Part I, Code of Conduct of the Provincial Human Rights Act. It includes the Province of Alberta crest and an illustration of the Provincial Legislature Building.

The Modern Instructor

Item is a magazine presenting ideas and exercises for teachers to use in grades I to VIII. It also contains articles by experts pertaining to teaching.

Series consists of files created by A. George Bayly, which include correspondence, memoranda, notices and general information to and from Bayly. Most material relates to Elementary curriculum, curriculum development, testing and reading. Bayly’s titles for this period were as follows: Elementary Supervisor or Supervisor, Elementary Education (1946-47, 1947-48), Director of Elementary Education (1948-49 to Oct 1955), and Assistant Superintendent, Elementary Education (beginning 01 Oct 1955).

Item is a cerlox-bound booklet prepared by the Elementary Curriculum Sub-Committee of the Edmonton Public School Local A.T.A. in co-operation with the Edmonton Public School Board. It provides information about the Enterprise Program and Units of Study. It lists authorized readers.

Item is a cerlox-bound booklet prepared by the Elementary Curriculum Sub-Committee of the Edmonton Public School Local A.T.A. in co-operation with Edmonton Public Schools. It contains the information needed by teachers to create Enterprise Units for Grade III and is divided into the units of study.

Integrity of original filing system maintained.

Item consists of documents and correspondence related to career counseling, text books, curriculum, staff issues, student employment, I.Q. and achievement tests, and conferences. The file was maintained by G. R. Conquest and M. J. V. Downey.

Included are notices of meetings, information about Junior High counseling and mathematics, an outline of the High School Program to be used by Grade IX students, and employment and scholarship information for Grade XII graduates.

Happy Birthday Canada

Item is a souvenir booklet for children in Grades I-III in Edmonton Public Schools and commemorates Canada’s Centennial. It provides historical highlights from 1867 to 1967 with an emphasis on Edmonton. It was designed and printed by the Jasper Place Composite High School Graphic Arts Classes.

Item is a brief history of Home Economics in both Alberta and Edmonton Public Schools covering the period 1870-1966. Descriptions of key Home Economics supervisors and staff are included. The author was supervisor of Girls’ Technical and Industrial Education at the time of writing.

Series consists of information about the Advanced Placement (AP) Program gathered by Trustee Shirley E. Forbes. General information, newsletters and examinations are included and relate to the AP subjects of Art, Biology, Chemistry, Classics, English, French, History, Mathematics and Physics. The Advanced Placement program was first offered in Edmonton Public Schools in 1991.

Series consists of the minutes of the Edmonton Public Schools Education Committee, made up of Trustees, School Board officials and representatives from the ATA and other unions and a representative from the Home and School Association. The committee addressed issues affecting the delivery of education including new courses, changes in programs and required educational materials. The minutes are signed by the secretary.

School Management, Health and Discipline Committee Minutes

Series consists of minutes from a committee made up of Trustees, School Board Officials and representatives. Throughout its history, the committee was called The Management Committee; The Management and Health Committee; The Management, Health and Discipline Committee; and The Management and Discipline Committee. The committee addressed staff appointments, dismissals and salaries; new courses and programs; new schools; student discipline; student health issues; and the organization of programs such as Kindergarten.
