Series reflects administrative activities of Strathcona School District No. 216. Although chiefly financial and staffing issues, opening of new schools, amalgamation with Edmonton School District No. 7, Inspector's Reports, correspondence with University of Alberta, Association of School Trustees of Alberta and Department of Education is also included. Of note is a letter from Lieutenant Governor Bulyea regarding the opening of Strathcona Collegiate Institute. Compiled by the Secretary-Treasurer, files are arranged chronologically. Correspondence of a related subject often glued together. The top document reflects the chronological date within the file but often much earlier documents are attached.

Item focuses on Dramatics in the Intermediate and High Schools. Included are supply costs, costs for erecting stages with written and sketched plans and correspondence from the Alberta Dramatic League. Intermediate and High Schools offering Dramatics in 1937 are listed with names of the Dramatics teachers. These are McKay Avenue, King Edward, Westmount, Strathcona, McCauley, Victoria, Eastwood, Spruce Avenue, Highlands, Riverdale, Normal Practice, Garneau and H.A. Gray.

Item pertains to religious instruction in schools and, specifically, Bible readings. The file includes the document Bible Readings in Edmonton Public Schools, Revised Copy. It also includes the Report of Committee Appointed to Select a List of Bible Readings. Item also contains inquiries from other school boards, parent concerns and evaluations by teachers. Included are letters from the Religious Tract Society and a copy of a report on the learning of the Ten Commandments in state schools in the British Empire.

Administration Files : Vacation School

Item pertains to the Vacation School, a program at Victoria High School to prepare grade XI students for supplemental examinations. Examinations were conducted by the Department of Education and the University of Alberta. The Vacation School was aimed at students who failed their June examinations but others took the summer courses as well. File includes correspondence, planning information and reports from teachers.

Item contains correspondence regarding intelligence tests. Included are letters of concern from parents, a copy of a letter from the Edmonton High School Teachers' Alliance and correspondence with C.B. Willis, Victoria High, regarding the comparison of student I.Q.'s within the city High Schools. Also included is a sample test.

Immigrants and Schooling

Item pertains to the education of the children of new immigrants from Central Europe particularly Ruthenians and Ukrainians. It includes articles, handbooks, addresses, House of Commons Debates and reports from 1895-1934. Item is an educational kit used by students taking Education Foundations 430 at the University of Alberta.

Progressive Education

Item pertains to the theory and methods of Enterprise Education. It includes criticisms of Enterprise Education and reflections of teachers who taught it. Enterprise Education is based on the philosophy of the Progressive Education Association. The information in the kit is from 1917-1970, predominantly 1929-1946. Item is an educational kit used by students taking Education Foundations 430 at the University of Alberta.

Memorandum of Transmittal

Series consists of documents from the Superintendent of Schools for the Edmonton Public School Board Trustees. The memoranda provided information about schools, students, staff, buildings, departments, curriculum changes, grievances, press releases and meetings. Appendices are included, but not all are on file.

Grade One Science Process Test

Item is a test examining the degree to which the objectives for the program Science : A Process Approach, Level A were being met. The resulting data was to be used for possible program revision. Included in this item are the test manual, a list of slide numbers and their correlating test questions, and three plastic sheets of slides. The original box and slide carousel, 84.47.6-10 are missing.

Review of Educational Policies in Canada

Item is a six volume report coordinated by a Council of Education Ministers in co-operation with the Federal Government. The six volumes: Forward & Introduction, Government of Canada, Western Region, Ontario, Quebec, and Atlantic Region were to acquaint others with educational development in Canada and to assist the educational authorities in planning more effectively for the future. Most include a descriptions of education within the region, including trends, goals, structure and post-secondary institutions. The Government of Canada Report addresses the Federal Government's role in education.

Item is a booklet produced by Alberta Education which outlines the content of each course at the Senior High School level together with a list o recommended textbooks and approved secondary references.

Elementary Math A - F

Item consists of six guides from the Elementary Mathematics Program of Edmonton Public Schools which are labeled A through F. The program materials were designed to assist teachers in the use of a text and activity approach in the teaching of Grade I - VI mathematics. The program was developed, in part, by Edmonton Public Schools’ teachers.

Item consists of reports, minutes and research produced by the Committee on Education in Older Areas of the City. This committee was made up of senior officials in Edmonton Public Schools. It investigated problems associated with educating children in inner city schools and addressed future city development which would affect inner city schools.

Item is a summary of the Edmonton Public Schools project which took input reports (Teacher Schedule, Class Load and School Specification data) and used a CPU to produce output reports (Teacher Timetable, School Timetable and Class Load Reports). Item includes information about the project and input and output documents.

Preparing for School : A Message for Parents

Item is a booklet which suggests actions parents can take at home to help prepare their child for school. The original manuscript was prepared by members of the curriculum and bureau staffs, Edmonton Public Schools. It was designed and printed by the students of the Graphics Arts Classes, Jasper Place Composite High School.

Bayly’s titles for this period were as follows: Elementary Supervisor or Supervisor, Elementary Education (1946-47, 1947-48), Director of Elementary Education (1948-49 to Oct 1955), and Assistant Superintendent, Elementary Education (beginning 01 Oct 1955).
