Directory of Pupils

Series consists of a single sheet for every class, in every school, per school year. Early years list boys and girls on separate sheets. High Schools are missing from 1964-65. Forms record school, date, teacher, students, each student’s address, birth date, grade, religion and residency status. Information was used by the finance/revenue area to calculate the annual education grant submission to Alberta Education. The lists then served as a directory of students, for the district, for the school year.

Annual Report 1955

Item is the Annual Report of Edmonton School District No. 7 for the calendar year 1955. It includes a forward by the Superintendent of Schools and a description of instruction, maintenance and building of schools. Also included is a brief report of Financial Highlights. Annual reports are created to demonstrate accountability to the Provincial Government Education department in accordance with the responsibilities specified in the School Act.

The fonds consists of minutes, correspondence and annual reports of the Board of Trustees of Edmonton School Division and committees of the Board; student records; blueprints, plans and correspondence related to purchasing, construction, maintenance and renovation of school buildings; personnel files including employee contract and salary records; promotional and public relations material; curricula and teaching material; financial records, including assessment rolls from 1885 onward; and school planning documentation. Also includes administrative files and bulletins from the office of the Superintendent of Schools; records for individual schools, including staff meeting minutes, financial records, student government records, and material related to sports and club activities.

Burt Demeriez Papers

The materials represent the work conducted by Burt Demeriez during his employment with the Edmonton School Division. The series contains memorandums, correspondence, drafts, reports, photographs, programs, booklets and itineraries in relation to developing programs in Outdoor Education, the Bennett Centre and Edmonton Public Schools Archives and Museum.

Alberta's 75th Anniversary

File contains materials describing how Edmonton Public Schools were to be involved in celebrating Alberta's 75th Anniversary. Letters depict how the City of Edmonton, the Municipal Anniversary Committee and Alberta's 75th Planning Committee and the 75th Anniversary Commission were involved in proposals, student exchange trips, grants, school projects and program development.

Edmonton Public Schools Archives and Museum - McKay Avenue School Reopening

File contains an invitation to the re-dedication Ceremony of McKay Avenue School, an invitation to the McKay Avenue School open house, the McKay Avenue School Historic Park commemorative program, thank you letters addressed to Burt Demeriez, a 1982 Provincial Legislature Building commemorative program, a brochure for Edmonton Public Schools Archives and Museum and a "Welcome to a Sneak Preview of McKay Avenue School Restoration Project" brochure.

Bennett Environmental Education Centre - Program Development

File contains program development materials from the Bennett Environmental Education Centre. Items include teachers' handbooks, an Architecture Appreciation Program booklet, The Mapmaker of the West-David Thompson, The Pathfinder Orienteering Area by Canadian Orienteering Service and a Bennett Centre student classroom manual for grade 7.

McArthur School Official Opening

Item consists of the programme for the official opening of McArthur Elementary School and an invitation from W. W. Butchart to Progress Electric Ltd. to attend the opening.

1975-76 Guidelines for Staff Utilization

Item is a booklet presenting information and guidelines intended to assist school administration and staff within Edmonton Public Schools. It contains information on Personnel, Administrative Services, and Curriculum. Item consists of photocopied pages which were held together by a staple.

Item is a brochure describing the English-French and English-Ukrainian bilingual programs. A list of schools offering the programs is included.

Item is a magazine presenting ideas and exercises for teachers to use in grades I to VIII. It also contains articles by experts pertaining to teaching.

Item consists of plans of the H. A. Gray School. It has been color-coded to indicate the daily cleaning schedule. Item was removed from a frame.

Series contains inactive files that were closed in June 1971 and sent to the vault for storage. Files are arranged numerically by the original file number assigned by creator.

Superintendent's Monthly Reports

Series contains reports given by the Edmonton Public Schools Superintendent to the Board of Trustees pertaining to the administration of Edmonton Public Schools. These reports present information, enquiries and recommendations. This series also contains reports and information presented to the Superintendent by committees, school officials and outside agencies. The subject matter in the reports varies, but most information relates to expenditures and budget. The Superintendents responsible for the reports are James McCaig (1906-1913), W.L. Richardson (Acting Nov-Dec 1913), W.G. Carpenter (1914-1923), George A. McKee (1924-1940) and Ross S. Sheppard (1940-1955).

Series completed by principals. Cards organized chronologically and alphabetically by school. Each card records Month, Year, School, Teacher, Grade, No. of Teaching Days, Aggregate Days' Attendance, Percentage and Lates. Pre 1962, on verso Substitute, Day Taught, For Whom, Cause, Days Absent, No. of Fire Drills in Month and Avg Time and Principal. Post Sep 1962, on verso Avg Enrolment, Avg No. of Pupils per Class, No. of Register Room Teachers, No. of Other Full-Time Teachers, No. of Part-Time Teachers, No. of Fire Drills in Month, Avg Time in Seconds and Principal.

Ratings of Public and High School Teachers

Item has each teacher from each Edmonton Public and High school rated on a chart. Teachers rated as F., F.G., G., V.G. and E. Associated Edmonton School District No. 7 Board Minutes describe item as the Report of the Superintendent and the Assistant Superintendent on the Grading of Public School Teachers. The report was adopted September 8, 1931. Item is stamped with board minutes page, date and disposition. See page 8602 of Edmonton School District No. 7 Board Minutes.

Director of Technical Education

Item is a file containing letters from individuals applying for the position of Director of Technical Education. Includes letter of successful applicant, W. L. Richardson. A more accurate description of the position is Principal of Edmonton Technical School. All letters are re-typed copies.

Superintendent of Plant

Item is two files containing letters of application for position of Superintendent of Plant. It includes the job advertisement in the form of a newspaper clipping and outline of the qualifications and duties of both Superintendent of Plant and Chief Caretaker. Letter of application from successful candidate, R. L. Haskell, included.

Expenditures of Canadian Schools

Item pertains to the collecting and analyzing of financial data from several school boards including: correspondence and completed questionnaires from various Canadian school boards, a chart showing the cost per capita for 1923 on the basis of school attendance for several Canadian cities as well as Los Angeles, Seattle and Spokane, a second chart comparing the education cost per capita for 1922 of several Canadian cities, a third chart comparing teacher salaries in different Canadian cities as well as Los Angeles, Seattle and Spokane, and a diagram comparing the cost of public schools across the Canadian provinces. This file was compiled by Sarah Wilson, Edmonton Public Schools Secretary-Treasurer (1921-1925).

Administration Files : Broadcast of Lessons

Item includes correspondence and lesson plans pertaining to the Grade VIII through XII lessons broadcast on the University of Alberta Radio Station, CKUA. Broadcasts were made when the schools were closed due to an epidemic. File was discontinued and removed from a larger series.

Administration Files : Contests and Competitions

Item is a file of correspondence regarding student poster and essay contests sponsored by service clubs, the Canadian Authors' Association and the radio station CJCA. The item contains information about a federal job competition and the Civil Service Examination. A pamphlet from the Province of Alberta outlining the competition to destroy crows and magpies is also included. File was discontinued and removed from a larger series.

Item contains a letter from J. Percy Page, Principal of McDougall Commercial High School to G.A. McKee, Superintendent of Edmonton Public Schools, explaining how the double shift system within McDougall Commercial High School is organized. The remainder of the file is hand-written evaluations of the double shift system written by students and one teacher, Oliver McKee.

Administration Files : Dramatics

Item focuses on Dramatics in the Intermediate and High Schools. Included are supply costs, costs for erecting stages with written and sketched plans and correspondence from the Alberta Dramatic League. Intermediate and High Schools offering Dramatics in 1937 are listed with names of the Dramatics teachers. These are McKay Avenue, King Edward, Westmount, Strathcona, McCauley, Victoria, Eastwood, Spruce Avenue, Highlands, Riverdale, Normal Practice, Garneau and H.A. Gray.

Administration Files : Flag Salute

Item relates to the saluting of the flag in schools during WW II and immediately afterwards. In January 1940, the Board approved the ceremony of saluting and pledging to the flag. The file contains correspondence relating to the suspension of students who refused to salute the flag. Other correspondence is from the RCMP, the Deputy Attorney General, Office of the City Solicitor and the Coleman School District. A list of students who were suspended is included.

Item contains correspondence and information about Goodwill Day, observed on May 18. File contains messages written by Edmonton students in reply to Welsh broadcasts. Information on the Empire Youth Movement included. Within the file is correspondence between G.A. McKee, Superintendent of Schools, and Dennis Murphree of The Know Mississippi Better Train.

Administration Files : Hot Drinks in Schools

Item pertains to the supplying of hot drinks in schools. Included are cost estimates for gas ranges and utensils and a report on the sale of hot drinks at the Edmonton Technical High School for January 1933. Item also includes a requisition form from the Queen's Avenue Sight Saving Class for cocoa supplies.

Item contains information and correspondence about the following scholarships. The Booker T. Washington W.C.T.U trophy, the Hon. Frank Oliver Chapter I.O.D.E. Charles Keefer Memorial Bursary, The Municipal Chapter of Edmonton I.O.D.E. Scholarships, Queen's University Provincial Scholarships, Robert Tegler Matriculation Scholarships, Upper Canada College Scholarships and Bursaries, Governor-General's Medals for Gr. VIII, the Gyro Scholarship and the Dana College Scholarship Certificate.

Item pertains to the distribution of the school fund for necessitous children (Relief Fund) by principals. Lists of amounts disbursed through the schools and receipts for clothing and dental work included. Funds were raised through concerts and contributions. Included is correspondence from Nelles Buchanan offering a donation and a letter from the Special Relief Department regarding the Dominion-Provincial Youth Training Programme.
