Fine Arts and Library Committee Minutes

Item consists of the minutes of the Fine Arts and Library Committee, made up of Edmonton Public Schools Trustees and School Board Officials. The Chairman was Trustee H. Sinclair and the secretary was T.W. Meen. Enrolment in Fine Arts courses, University recognition of Fine Arts courses, Edmonton Public Library Bookmobile Service, and a request by the Edmonton Art Gallery for assistance were discussed.

The book was maintained by the Secretary-Treasurer and each page is initialed. It is organized chronologically by year and month.

Item contains correspondence written and maintained by the Secretary-Treasurer for the Board of Trustees. C.F. Strang and St. George Jellett were the Secretary-Treasurers at this time. Included are letters to the Board of Education, teachers, school inspectors and the Imperial Bank. Subjects include the purchasing of supplies, complaints about night students, debentures received, the hiring of staff, the purchasing of a school site and teacher agreements.

Assessment Roll : Edmonton Protestant School District

Item is the property tax assessment roll for Edmonton. Each entry includes the name of the property occupant and their religion, sex, age, occupation and place of residence; the name of owner and their religion, sex, age, occupation and place of residence; and the number of lots taxable denoted by district, block, township and range. Information was used to collect taxes, which funded the school district. The official name of the district was Edmonton Protestant Public School District No. 7.

Item is the minutes of Committee on School Management of Edmonton School District No. 7. The committee was also known as the Management Committee. Minutes address staffing and building issues and include complaints about Superintendent McCaig. Both Superintendents McCaig and McKee were on the Committee. Most minutes are signed by both the Secretary, W. D. Bradley, and the Chairman, S. A. G. Barnes.

Item consists of correspondence and accounts pertaining to the construction of the Garneau Temporary School. Most of the correspondence is between the construction firm of O.J. Edinger and the School Board Building Commissioner.

Item includes letters of tender for construction of a temporary frame school in Elm Park, a list of hardware used, correspondence from the Building Commissioner at Edmonton Public Schools to the contractor and sub-contractors, and a balance sheet.

Term Examination Report

Item is the term examination report for Bennett School. It lists the students, their ages, the grades they achieved in various subjects, and the teachers' recommendations. The name of the teacher for each grade is also included.

Edmonton Public School Board Teachers’ Contract and Salary Record

Series consists of index cards listing yearly contract and salary records for teachers. Each card includes a teacher’s name, school, date of contract agreement, salary, type of teacher’s certificate, and first day of service. On verso is a record of work by month and day and of monthly payments. Data handwritten. Series is incomplete. It includes surnames from Ainsley to Scott.

Item is two files containing letters of application for position of Superintendent of Plant. It includes the job advertisement in the form of a newspaper clipping and outline of the qualifications and duties of both Superintendent of Plant and Chief Caretaker. Letter of application from successful candidate, R. L. Haskell, included.

H. A. Gray School Construction

Item consists of specs for the building, heating and ventilation of H. A. Gray School signed by contractors Doyle, Thomas and Christensen Ltd and by Kelly and Kokott Co. Correspondence about construction problems and costs is included. Reference is made to King Edward and McDougall Schools under construction at the same time.

Item is a list of teacher applicants to the Edmonton Public School Board. It is arranged alphabetically and includes the teachers’ names, addresses and alpha-numeric codes.

Item consists of Heating and Ventilating Specs for two schools not yet built. One school would be located on Block 7, 8 (HBR), which was bordered by 107 and 108 Streets, the Legislature and Jasper Avenue. The second would be located on one of the Hudsons Bay Additions.

School Supplies

Item originated in Bennett School and consists of a general list of supplies to be handed out, a tally of supplies given to individual pupils in Grades II, III and IV in September 1915, and the names of the students who received primers in January 1915.
