Ratings of Public and High School Teachers

Item has each teacher from each Edmonton Public and High school rated on a chart. Teachers rated as F., F.G., G., V.G. and E. Associated Edmonton School District No. 7 Board Minutes describe item as the Report of the Superintendent and the Assistant Superintendent on the Grading of Public School Teachers. The report was adopted September 8, 1931. Item is stamped with board minutes page, date and disposition. See page 8602 of Edmonton School District No. 7 Board Minutes.

Director of Technical Education

Item is a file containing letters from individuals applying for the position of Director of Technical Education. Includes letter of successful applicant, W. L. Richardson. A more accurate description of the position is Principal of Edmonton Technical School. All letters are re-typed copies.

Superintendent of Plant

Item is two files containing letters of application for position of Superintendent of Plant. It includes the job advertisement in the form of a newspaper clipping and outline of the qualifications and duties of both Superintendent of Plant and Chief Caretaker. Letter of application from successful candidate, R. L. Haskell, included.

Expenditures of Canadian Schools

Item pertains to the collecting and analyzing of financial data from several school boards including: correspondence and completed questionnaires from various Canadian school boards, a chart showing the cost per capita for 1923 on the basis of school attendance for several Canadian cities as well as Los Angeles, Seattle and Spokane, a second chart comparing the education cost per capita for 1922 of several Canadian cities, a third chart comparing teacher salaries in different Canadian cities as well as Los Angeles, Seattle and Spokane, and a diagram comparing the cost of public schools across the Canadian provinces. This file was compiled by Sarah Wilson, Edmonton Public Schools Secretary-Treasurer (1921-1925).

Administration Files : Broadcast of Lessons

Item includes correspondence and lesson plans pertaining to the Grade VIII through XII lessons broadcast on the University of Alberta Radio Station, CKUA. Broadcasts were made when the schools were closed due to an epidemic. File was discontinued and removed from a larger series.

Item pertains to the distribution of the school fund for necessitous children (Relief Fund) by principals. Lists of amounts disbursed through the schools and receipts for clothing and dental work included. Funds were raised through concerts and contributions. Included is correspondence from Nelles Buchanan offering a donation and a letter from the Special Relief Department regarding the Dominion-Provincial Youth Training Programme.

Item pertains to religious instruction in schools and, specifically, Bible readings. The file includes the document Bible Readings in Edmonton Public Schools, Revised Copy. It also includes the Report of Committee Appointed to Select a List of Bible Readings. Item also contains inquiries from other school boards, parent concerns and evaluations by teachers. Included are letters from the Religious Tract Society and a copy of a report on the learning of the Ten Commandments in state schools in the British Empire.

Item pertains to student concerts held at McDougall church. The proceeds of the concerts went toward the Department of Music, the Department of Physical Training and the Children's Fund to Deal with Emergencies (Relief Fund). Included are minutes from organizational meetings, receipts, breakdown of ticket sales, programs and financial statements. The file also contains a list of the recipients of the School Chorus Awards from the Alberta Provincial Museum Festival, 1947.

Item consists of correspondence between the Superintendent of Schools and principals regarding the removal of straps from the classrooms and the exchange of smaller straps for larger ones.

Item pertains to the Vacation School, a program at Victoria High School to prepare grade XI students for supplemental examinations. Examinations were conducted by the Department of Education and the University of Alberta. The Vacation School was aimed at students who failed their June examinations but others took the summer courses as well. File includes correspondence, planning information and reports from teachers.

Item contains correspondence regarding intelligence tests. Included are letters of concern from parents, a copy of a letter from the Edmonton High School Teachers' Alliance and correspondence with C.B. Willis, Victoria High, regarding the comparison of student I.Q.'s within the city High Schools. Also included is a sample test.

Item is a file of correspondence regarding student poster and essay contests sponsored by service clubs, the Canadian Authors' Association and the radio station CJCA. The item contains information about a federal job competition and the Civil Service Examination. A pamphlet from the Province of Alberta outlining the competition to destroy crows and magpies is also included. File was discontinued and removed from a larger series.

Item contains a letter from J. Percy Page, Principal of McDougall Commercial High School to G.A. McKee, Superintendent of Edmonton Public Schools, explaining how the double shift system within McDougall Commercial High School is organized. The remainder of the file is hand-written evaluations of the double shift system written by students and one teacher, Oliver McKee.

Item focuses on Dramatics in the Intermediate and High Schools. Included are supply costs, costs for erecting stages with written and sketched plans and correspondence from the Alberta Dramatic League. Intermediate and High Schools offering Dramatics in 1937 are listed with names of the Dramatics teachers. These are McKay Avenue, King Edward, Westmount, Strathcona, McCauley, Victoria, Eastwood, Spruce Avenue, Highlands, Riverdale, Normal Practice, Garneau and H.A. Gray.

Item relates to the saluting of the flag in schools during WW II and immediately afterwards. In January 1940, the Board approved the ceremony of saluting and pledging to the flag. The file contains correspondence relating to the suspension of students who refused to salute the flag. Other correspondence is from the RCMP, the Deputy Attorney General, Office of the City Solicitor and the Coleman School District. A list of students who were suspended is included.

Item contains correspondence and information about Goodwill Day, observed on May 18. File contains messages written by Edmonton students in reply to Welsh broadcasts. Information on the Empire Youth Movement included. Within the file is correspondence between G.A. McKee, Superintendent of Schools, and Dennis Murphree of The Know Mississippi Better Train.

Item pertains to the supplying of hot drinks in schools. Included are cost estimates for gas ranges and utensils and a report on the sale of hot drinks at the Edmonton Technical High School for January 1933. Item also includes a requisition form from the Queen's Avenue Sight Saving Class for cocoa supplies.

The Five Year Program : A Guide for Parents

Item is a booklet for parents whose children are rapid learners and therefore eligible for the five year program. The five year program allowed children to complete the six years of elementary school in five years. The booklet describes the program, the type of children who would be eligible, and the role of parents.

Minute Book of the Committee on Buildings and Grounds

Item is the minutes of an Edmonton School District No. 7 committee. Comprised of several trustees and a secretary, the committee addressed issues such as concerns/wages of caretakers and workmen, maintenance of buildings and grounds, costs, new schools, additions to buildings, tenders, contracts, accounts, expenditures and community use of buildings and grounds. Minutes are arranged chronologically by year. Most minutes are original. Some are signed by the Secretary and the Chairman.

Cash-Book No. 1 : Edmonton Protestant Public School No.7

Item is an account book showing money coming in (cash) and going out (contra). It lists ratepayers, the amount of taxes collected, expenditures and amounts carried over. The book was maintained by the Secretary-Treasurer and each page is initialed. It is organized chronologically by year and month.

Item contains correspondence written and maintained by the Secretary-Treasurer for the Board of Trustees. C.F. Strang and St. George Jellett were the Secretary-Treasurers at this time. Included are letters to the Board of Education, teachers, school inspectors and the Imperial Bank. Subjects include the purchasing of supplies, complaints about night students, debentures received, the hiring of staff, the purchasing of a school site and teacher agreements.

Item is a newspaper written by students at Eastwood High School and includes reports of school activities, humorous columns and advertising by local businesses.

Item is a booklet containing reports on tournaments and sports in Edmonton Public Schools played in 1928. It also includes Edmonton High and Public School Sports Records, 1908-1928 inclusive.

Series contains inactive files that were closed in June 1971 and sent to the vault for storage. Files are arranged numerically by the original file number assigned by creator.

Item is an Edmonton Public School Board policy manual. It is divided into sections labelled: project booklets, table of policies, draft policies, District Philosophy, School Board, Communications, Community, Curriculum, Students, Personnel, Research, Business, Other Agencies.

Elementary School Information For Parents

Item consists of two brochures, one for 1977-78 and one for 1979-80. Each brochure is intended to provide parents with basic information about their child’s school. It includes the school calendar and space to record information about the child’s school and classes.

Memorandum of Transmittal

Series consists of documents from the Superintendent of Schools for the Edmonton Public School Board Trustees. The memoranda provided information about schools, students, staff, buildings, departments, curriculum changes, grievances, press releases and meetings. Appendices are included, but not all are on file.

Grade One Science Process Test

Item is a test examining the degree to which the objectives for the program Science : A Process Approach, Level A were being met. The resulting data was to be used for possible program revision. Included in this item are the test manual, a list of slide numbers and their correlating test questions, and three plastic sheets of slides. The original box and slide carousel, 84.47.6-10 are missing.

Edmonton School District No. 7 Building Program 1980-1983

Item is a coil-bound plan detailing recommendations for school and core portable development for the 1980-1983 period. Core portables are structures attached to the main school building and are usually built in groups of 4, 6 or 8. The plan lists recommended projects, budgets, basis of budget development, the financial effects of the recommended projects, the effect of recommended construction in relation to district enrolment and capacity, and a ranking of the different projects into three priority levels.

Survey of Media Services

Item is a survey conducted in October and November 1976 for the Edmonton Public School Board. It is a survey of the media services within Edmonton Public Schools within the intent of making recommendations for the further development of these services. This coil-bound document includes the objectives of the survey, its results, and the recommendations. The survey questions appear in the Appendices.

L.Y. Cairns Vocational School Equipment Budget

Item is divided into four parts (a-d). (a) budget which lists equipment needed for each room, price of each item and total for each room. (b) memorandum that explains the list does not include music equipment, one unassigned vocational area and teaching aids such as maps and globes. It also recommends that the list of equipment be put out to tender. (c) site plan, main floor plan, and second floor plan. (d) Equipment Budget Breakdown by room. It includes the total equipment for vocational and academic budgets, and the total installation cost broken down into academic, vocational and labor budgets.

City of Edmonton : Public Schools

Item is a map produced by the Edmonton Public Schools Planning Branch showing the city's elementary schools and their boundaries for the 1973-1974 period. Donald Ross School has been highlighted in a red pen.

Item is a handbook of the regulations to be followed by teachers and principals, which would implement Board Policy. An attached memorandum explains that each staff member should be in possession of the Administrative Regulations handbook.

Series pertains to policy development within Edmonton Public Schools. The series is arranged into three sub-series: 84.51.3 Policy Development : Survey of Principals, 84.51.4-7 Policy Development : Advisory Committee which contains agenda, minutes, memoranda and the policies and regulations the committee has agreed to, 84.51.8 Policy Development : Project Booklets and Draft Policies which consists of Advisory Committee notes and a draft policy manual.

Submission on Behalf of the School District to the Conciliation Board

Item addresses the dispute between Alberta Teachers' Association and Edmonton Public School Board regarding salary agreement revisions for Edmonton Public Schools' Teachers. The first part describes previous agreements, estimated increases in grade enrolments to 1963, classrooms required, construction costs, instructional staff, teachers' salaries submission, and conditions affecting wage and salary scales. The second part of the item is a teacher list by school, apparently compiled for the submission.

Inspectors' Reports on Teachers 1924 and 1925

Item is a list of the teachers in each school. For each teacher, it lists the grade the teacher taught, the rating the teacher received from the school inspector for both 1924 and 1925, and the name of the inspector who evaluated the teacher.

Item is a list of Public School Principals. Public School refers to Grades I - VIII. It includes the date when the individual was appointed to staff and the date when the individual was appointed principal.

Item includes a list of appointed teachers with date and permanent or provisional status. It also includes a review of Temporary Teachers, a list of Public School Appointments, a list of High School Appointments, and a list of High School Appointments to be reviewed. There is a list of applicants for a position at Eastwood High School, a position at Westmount High School, a position in the Commercial Department, and a position as a Manual Instructor. Letters of application for the Manual Instructor position are on file.
