Superintendent's Monthly Reports

Series contains reports given by the Edmonton Public Schools Superintendent to the Board of Trustees pertaining to the administration of Edmonton Public Schools. These reports present information, enquiries and recommendations. This series also contains reports and information presented to the Superintendent by committees, school officials and outside agencies. The subject matter in the reports varies, but most information relates to expenditures and budget. The Superintendents responsible for the reports are James McCaig (1906-1913), W.L. Richardson (Acting Nov-Dec 1913), W.G. Carpenter (1914-1923), George A. McKee (1924-1940) and Ross S. Sheppard (1940-1955).

Major G. H. Schoof

Item is a file of correspondence between Gustav (or Gustaf) H. Schoof and the Superintendent of Edmonton Public Schools. Schoof lectured to schools and other groups about his adventures as a Mounted Policeman and about temperance and outdoor living. He also donated a trophy, the Major Schoof Cup, to the district for sports competition.

Item consists of correspondence and documents pertaining to the court case of teacher John M. Swain vs. Superintendent McKee, Cedric O. Hicks, A. E. Ottewell and A. T. Cushing.

Item consists of three notebooks of Pitman Shorthand. The notebooks were used by a stenographer and possibly contain correspondence dictated by the Superintendent and later used in the Swain vs. McKee et al court case.

Bible Readings for Use in the Public Schools

Item is a book of Bible readings compiled in 1929-30 and used for religious instruction in Edmonton Public Schools. The readings were to be read by the teacher but not commented upon. The majority of the readings are from the Old Testament. In 1930, the Bible readings were read to students in Grades I-VIII during closing exercises. In 1943, religious instruction was offered in one period per week during the last period of the day in certain schools. By 1956, the Bible readings could also be used at the opening of school.

Ratings of Public and High School Teachers

Item has each teacher from each Edmonton Public and High school rated on a chart. Teachers rated as F., F.G., G., V.G. and E. Associated Edmonton School District No. 7 Board Minutes describe item as the Report of the Superintendent and the Assistant Superintendent on the Grading of Public School Teachers. The report was adopted September 8, 1931. Item is stamped with board minutes page, date and disposition. See page 8602 of Edmonton School District No. 7 Board Minutes.

Item consists of letters written by Superintendent of Schools, G. A. McKee, and Assistant Superintendent, L. B. Yule, regarding concerts put on by Edmonton Public Schools to raise money for an emergency fund. The fund was to assist school children whose needs were not met by the civic relief organization.

The Edmonton Public Schools

Series consists of bulletins modeled after the publication, The Kansas City Schools, that were first issued in Jan 1949. The EPSB Annual Report 1949 refers to the new publication as a bulletin. This series begins with the second issue in Mar 1949. With the exception of 1949 and 1955, two bulletins were printed each school year, one in the fall and one in the winter. Each issue included a message from the Superintendent and information about the school district. The final bulletin was issued in Feb 1961 after which it was removed from the budget at the Board’s request.
