As many places in Ireland were called Derry, it was necessary to add a second name to differentiate between various towns. In 1609, "London" was added to "Derry."

A sloe is the small black or purplish fruit of the black thorn, a thorny bush. Killarney is the anglicized version of Cill Airne. An addition was added to the school in 1967.
